LUNCH IS BURNED

It was around noon that Ah Leng started preparing lunch. She tirred the pot of half-cooked porridge. She also ad a kettle of water on the other stove.

The telephone in the living room rang.

Ah Leng left the kitchen to answer the telephone. It was her good friend Mei Lan with some juicy bits of gossip to tell her. Soon Ah Leng was totally engrossed in the conversation. She forgot all about them pot of  porridge and the kettle of water.

After a while Ah Leng became aware of a peculiar smell. It smelt of something burning. The porridge, my godness, the porridge is burning, she thought!

She slammed the telephone receiver down and ran to the kitchen. Even before she reached the kitchen she could see smoke coming out from it.

Ah Leng cried in dismay. The pot of porridge was totally burned. Steam was shooting out from the kettle. In addition, the overflowing porridge made a mess of the stove. There was smoke and steam everywhere. What a disaster it had turned out to be. Now she would have to clean up the mess and start cooking all over again.
